Cretan Backyard Ultra
Basic Information
The Cretan Backyard Ultra is a running race held in Voritsi, 25 kilometers from Heraklion, Crete. It follows the "Backyard Ultra" format, where runners must complete a 6.706-kilometer loop every hour until only one runner remains. The first edition took place in 2023, and the event continues annually in January.
Historical Background of the Race
The race began in 2023 with Tassos Leonidis from Greece as the inaugural winner, completing 16 loops. In 2024, French runner Antoine Guillon emerged as the victor, covering 26 loops and 174.2 kilometers. The concept was to bring the unique format of Backyard Ultra to Crete, offering runners a challenge amidst a landscape full of beauty and history.
Route and Checkpoints
The route consists of a 6.706-kilometer loop starting and ending at the same point in Voritsi. There are no official checkpoints along the way; runners must return to the start every hour to continue to the next loop.
Elevation
The route includes 135 meters of positive elevation gain and negative elevation per loop.
Challenges and Difficulties
Main challenges include managing energy to return to the start point every hour, handling hydration and nutrition, and maintaining mental endurance to keep going loop after loop.
Special Features
The beauty of Crete, combining mountains and sea, provides a unique setting for the race. The local culture and hospitality of the residents also form part of the experience.
Participation Criteria
Experience: Previous participation in a Backyard Ultra or a race of at least 100 kilometers.
Time: Must have finished a 100-kilometer race in under 17 hours for men or 18 hours for women.

Support During the Route

Race Regulations
A new loop starts every hour.
Runners must return to the start within the hour.
No assistance is allowed outside the official station.
International Recognition
While not as internationally known as some races, the Cretan Backyard Ultra has begun to attract runners from abroad, especially those seeking new challenges in the Backyard Ultra format.
