Lacedaemonian Race of Byzantine Castles Mystras – Geraki – Monemvasia 130 km
History of the Race
The race was established to honor the Byzantine heritage of the region by connecting the three castles, which held strategic importance during the Byzantine era. The first event took place in 2019, aiming to highlight the historical and cultural significance of Laconia.
Route and Checkpoints
The route starts at the Lower Gate of the Mystras Castle, passing through Sparta, Chrysafa, Kalloni, Geraki, Agios Dimitrios Zarakas, and concludes at the Castle of Monemvasia. Along the route, there are aid and checkpoint stations to support the runners.
Challenges and Difficulties
The race presents significant challenges due to its long distance, elevation changes, and varied terrain. Runners must be prepared for continuous ascents and descents, as well as potential weather changes.

Participation Criteria
Runner Experience: Completion of at least one ultramarathon (over 50 km) or marathon within the last two years.
Age Limits: Minimum age of 18 years.
Physical Fitness and Health: A medical certificate issued within the last six months confirming the runner's good physical condition is required.
Mandatory Equipment: Includes a hydration system, headlamp with spare batteries, lightweight waterproof jacket, and a fully charged mobile phone.
Acceptance of Rules: Participants must read and accept the race regulations.
Support Along the Route
Throughout the course, hydration stations, first aid, and medical coverage are provided to ensure the safety and support of the runners.
Finish Line and Symbolism
The finish line at the Monemvasia Castle, in the Square of Christ Elkomenos, symbolizes the deep connection between sports, history, and the culture of the region.
