Historical Background of the Race
The race was created to honor the Byzantine heritage of the region, linking two significant castles that played a crucial role during the Byzantine period. The first edition was held in 2019, aiming to showcase the historical and cultural importance of Laconia.
Route and Checkpoints
The course begins at the Lower Gate of the Mystras Castle and passes through areas such as Sparta, Chrysafa, Kalloni, Goritsa, and Agioi Anargyroi, before ending in Geraki. The total distance is 47.5 kilometers, all on paved roads. Along the route, there are aid and checkpoint stations to support the runners.
Challenges and Difficulties
The race poses challenges due to the course length and elevation changes. Runners must be prepared for continuous uphill and downhill sections, as well as potential weather fluctuations. The route has a total elevation gain of approximately 760 meters. The start is at an altitude of approximately 420 meters, with the maximum elevation reaching 650 meters during the climb to Chrysafa, around the 21.5th kilometer. The finish is at an altitude of approximately 400 meters. The route includes continuous uphills and downhills, offering a demanding but also picturesque experience to the participants.

Participation Criteria

Running Experience: Completion of at least one ultramarathon (over 50 km) or marathon within the last two years.
Age Limits: Minimum age for participation is 18 years.
Physical Fitness and Health: A medical certificate confirming good physical health, issued within six months before the race, is required.
Mandatory Equipment: Includes a hydration system, headlamp with spare batteries, lightweight rain jacket, and a charged mobile phone.
Acceptance of Rules: Participants must read and agree to the race regulations.
Support Along the Route
Aid stations, first aid, and medical coverage are provided throughout the course to ensure the safety and support of the runners.

The finish line in Geraki, at the central square, serves as a powerful symbol of the connection between sports and the region’s history and culture.
